ewz - Electric Utility of the City of Zurich

The Starting Point
The Problem
ewz needed a digital solution to digitize business processes and give both private and business customers the ability to handle their requests online on their own. Integration into the complex IT environment of the City of Zurich posed a particular challenge.
The Solution
Quatico developed a tailored customer portal consisting of three components: a B2C portal for private customers, a B2B portal for business customers with mandate management, and a back office for customer service. The solution was built as a service-oriented architecture with micro frontends and integrated into Adobe Experience Manager (AEM).
The Implementation
The ewz customer portal was built with state-of-the-art technologies and a future-proof architecture:
Service-oriented architecture
Several micro frontends were integrated into an Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) portal. A headless approach enables flexible and scalable further development.
Seamless data integration
Connection of a wide range of data sources including SAP and solar plant production data. Integration with the City of Zurich's 'Mein Konto' for seamless authentication.
Agile development methodology
Implementation of executable requirements through continuous dialogue with domain experts. Automated test scenarios serve as functional safety nets.
Optimized deployment pipeline
Restructuring of the system architecture for daily releases. Automated tests for functionality, design, and interfaces. Manual testing reduced to the essentials.
Measurable Successes
The launch of the ewz customer portal led to significant improvements in efficiency and customer satisfaction:
One design system for all ewz applications
Every application used to build its forms differently. Today 13 shared form components are available, in use across three applications with consistent form tracking. Replacing the legacy forms is still outstanding.
Accessibility fixed centrally instead of four times
Findings from an external audit were triaged and corrected in the design system, so they take effect across all four applications at once. Verification runs automatically.
Load failures traced across system boundaries
The interface to SAP failed under load and the cause was unclear. Two load cases were traced from logs and code, the causes named, affected cases fully recorded and remedial measures prioritised as tickets.
What our customers say
With Quatico, we gained a partner who understands our business and our expertise. ewz can steer the development of the customer portal precisely and respond flexibly to new customer needs.
